I am doing this in collab with Kajol Cosmetics for a Natural Scrub. Kajol is an experienced soap maker and formulator. She posts nice information related to soaps, surfactants and more. Do check her instagram page.

Coming to the Scrub, we are making an anhydrous scrub and emulsified scrub, Kajol has posted a video on Anhydrous scrub in her channel, I am making an Emulsified Sugar Scrub.

What does this contain?

  • Shea butter: Shea butter has nice moisturising properties and forms a layer on the skin. It doesn't leave skin dry. Shea butter can be replaced with other butters, there can be a change in viscosity.

  • Sweet Almond is a light oil but has nice feel on ths skin. It is rich in anti-oxidant.

  • Emogreen L19 (C15-19 Alkane) is a light emollient which is alternative to low viscosity silicones. Sweet almond oil and Emogreen can be replaced with other light weight oils.

  • We are using a combination of Olivem 1000 and Cetyl alcohol for emulsification. Olivem 1000 makes thick and fluffy cream. Olivem 1000 has a fluffy texture and is a liquid crystal emulsifier. It has a rich feel on the skin. Cetyl alcohol/ Cetearyl alcohol / Stearic acid is required for thickening.

  • In Water Phase, We have Glycerin, DM water and SCI. Glycerin adds hydrating properties. Glycerin can be swapped with Propanediol, sodium lactate or other humectant. HA (Hyaluronic acid) adds thickening as gum and also adds more hydration after wash off. This helps specifically for dry skin.

  • I have added SCI (Sodium Cococyl Isethionate) for easy rinse off and foam. It can be increased upto 5%.

  • Always add De-mineralised water (or distilled water) in formulations for good shelf life.

  • For the exfoliants, we have granulated sugar and jojoba beads. You could use brown sugar or other exfoliant.

  • We also have preservative eco and rose geranium essential oil in cool down phase. Preservative eco is a natural emulsifier. It is not recommended for kids under 3. Rose geranium essential oil has a nice floral smell. This can be replaced with any other EO within the limits. Lavender essential oil, Rose essential oil or peppermint essential oil (less than 0.2%), mandarin essential oil are good choices for scrubs.
